Children with Autism and their families attended a family fun day organized by the Philip Jaisohn Memorial Foundation. The event gave children and their families an opportunity to have fun and to connect with other families.

In commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Philip Jaisohn Memorial Foundation, we are very pleased to open the application process for the Jaisohn Scholarships. This year marks the 17th year that scholarships will be awarded to Korean American students in the fields of medicine, nursing, social services, and journalism.

To be eligible for a scholarship, the applicant must be an undergraduate or graduate student as of September 2015, demonstrate financial need, and meet the qualification for each scholarship specified below. Please indicate clearly in your application for which scholarship you are applying.

The following scholarships will be awarded this year.

Helen Lee Scholarship
2 recipients, $2,000 each
This scholarship is intended for a student who demonstrates a clear financial need.
Sponsor: Helen Lee Scholarship Fund

Bong Hak Hyun Memorial Scholarship
2 recipients, $1,500 each
This award is for a student who is planning a career in health care and/or the medical field with evidence of potential, passion and leadership.

Jane Song Memorial Scholarship
2 recipients, $1,500 each
This award is for a nursing student or student pursuing a career in the area of “patient care” upon graduation.

Whan Soon Chung Scholarship
1 recipient, $1,500
This award is for a student who is planning a career in health care and/or the medical field. The student must also demonstrate an interest in following in the footsteps of Dr. Philip Jaisohn as a role model.

H.R. Chung Leadership Scholarship
1 recipient, $1,500
The award will be given to a student who has shown excellence in leadership in a variety of areas – extracurricular activities, varsity sports, and community involvement.

Jaisohn Journalism Scholarship (sponsored by Mr. Dong Sung Suh, Esq.)
1 recipient, $1,000
This award is for a student who is planning a career in journalism with evidence of potential and community service.

Jay Lee Social Service Scholarship
1 recipient, $1,000
This award is for a student who has participated in social service activities with evidence of community service and future potential.

Additional scholarships may be given to applicants who are not selected for the above award categories but who have demonstrated potential and are in need of financial assistance.

Interviews will be conducted for finalists.

The winner of the scholarships will be required to attend the awards ceremony and Jaisohn Lecture to be held in September 2015. Winners’ families are encouraged to attend the ceremony.

2016년도 (제18회) 서재필 재단 장학생  선발과 시상식

본 서재필 기념재단은 올해 (2016년)도 서재필재단 장학금 수혜 대상자를 선발하여 소정의 장학금을 지급하게 된 것을 대단히 기쁘게 생각합니다.

Helen Lee  장학금, 현봉학 기념 장학금, Jane Song 기념장학금, 서재필재단 장학금, 정학량 리더쉽 장학금, 서태원Journalism 장학금, 전희준 사회봉사 장학금, 그리고 올해 새로 시작하는 권정희 희망장학금 등8부문에 11명이 수상자로 선정되었고, 6명이 장려장학생 (Honorable mention)으로 선정되었습니다.

1999년에 헬렌리 장학금으로 부터 시작한 서재필 장학금은 올해로 18년째를 맡습니다.  그동안  많은 학생들 (올해 수상자 포함하여 총 183명)이 서재필장학금 혜택을 받았습니다. 올해도 전국적으로 모두 22명의 대학 및 대학원생들이 지원하였는데 특히 각자의 꿈과 포부, 그리고 여러가지 현재 처한, 그리고 넘어야 할 어려운 난관 들을 솔직히 표현한 essay 와 personal statement 를 읽고 많이 공감하였습니다. 

130년전 도미하여 수많은 역경들을 극복하고, 학업을 쌓으며, 조국의 독립과 민주주의, 미국과 지역사회의 발전에도 건전한 시민정신으로 많은 공헌을 한 서재필박사가 Korean-American으로서 서재필재단 장학금 응모자들에게 훌륭한 role model이 됨을 증언하고 있어서 매우 감명을 받았습니다.   

다음의 각 부문별 수상자 11명에 대한 시상식이 장학금 수상자, 부모님, 재단관계자와 내빈 여러분이 참석하여10월 8일 서재필재단에서 개최되었습니다.

The Philip Jaisohn Foundation is very pleased to invite scholarship applications from Korean-American students who exemplify academic excellence, dedication to healthcare, leadership and services to their schools and communities. The scholarships are for those who pursue the fields of medical, nursing, social service, and journalism. It is the 19^th year the Jaisohn Foundation has granted scholarships to university students who need financial help.

The Scholarships are in several categories: Helen Lee Scholarship, Bong Hak Hyun Memorial Scholarship, Jane Song Memorial Scholarship of Nursing, Hack Ryang Chung Leadership Scholarship, Tae Won Suh Journalism Scholarship, Jay Lee Social Service Scholarship, Daniel Yun Medical Scholarship and Jeong Hee Kweon Hope Scholarship. To be eligible for Scholarships, the applicant must be an undergraduate or graduate student as of September 2017, who fits the qualification for each scholarship specified below, and is in need of financial support for their education. This scholarship, sponsored by Mr. Tong S. Suhr, Esq. is for a student who is planning a career in journalism with evidence of potential and community service.

Daniel D. Yun MD Medical Scholarship: 1 student, $1,500

This scholarship, sponsored by Daniel D. Yun MD, is for a student who is pursuing a medical career with evidence of academic excellence and dedication to healthcare.   

Jay Lee Social Service Scholarship: 1 recipient, $1,000

This scholarship, sponsored by Mr. Hi C. Chun is for a student who has participated in social service activities with evidence of community services and future potential.

Jeong H. Kweon Hope Scholarship, 2 students, $1,000 each

These scholarships, sponsored by Mrs. Jeong Hee Kweon, are for two students who are pursuing their academic career even in the midst of financial hardship without discouragement.

서재필기념재단은 2017년도 서재필재단 장학생으로 금년에 새로 시작하는 ⸢대니엘 윤 의학 장학생⸥ 과 ⸢운신 한국유학생 장학생⸥을 포함하여 총 9부문에서 12명을 최종 선발하였습니다.

1999년에 ⸢헬렌리 장학생⸥으로 부터 시작한 서재필 장학금은 올해로 19년째를 맞이합니다.  그동안  많은 학생들 (올해 수상자 포함하여 총 194명)이 서재필장학금 혜택을 받았습니다. 올해는 작년보다 조금 많은 전국적으로 모두 26명의 훌륭한 대학생 및 대학원생들이 지원하여 치열한 경쟁을 하였습니다. 지원자 모두가 각자의 꿈과 포부, 그리고 넘어야 할 어려운 난관 등을 essay에서 진솔하게 표현하였으며, 심사과정에서 학생들간에 우열을 가리는데 쉽지않은 상황이었습니다.   

특히, 130여년전 미국으로 건너와 수많은 역경 속에서 학업을 쌓고, 조국의 독립과 민주주의를 위해 싸웠을 뿐만 아니라, 훌륭한 시민정신으로 미국과 지역사회의 발전에도 많은 공헌을 한 서재필박사가 많은 학생들에게 훌륭한 role model이 됨을 증언하고 있어서 매우 감명을 받았습니다.   

금년에 선발된 제19회 서재필재단 장학생 선발자 명단은 다음과 같습니다.

      헬렌리 장학생 (Helen Lee Scholarship):  각 $2,000

각 부문별 수상자 12명에 대한 시상식이 장학금 수상자 및 가족, 재단관계자와 여러 내외빈을 모시고, 오는 9월9일(토요일) 낮 12시에 서재필기념재단 강당에서 개최될 예정입니다. 

            2017년 제 19회 서재필 장학생에 선발된 학생들에게 다시 한번 축하의 말씀을 전하며, 장학금을 후원하신 sponsor 여러분들에게도 진심으로 감사드립니다.  그리고 이번 장학생에 선발되지 못한 분들에게는 진심으로 위로의 말씀을 드리며 다음 기회에 좋은 결과가 있기를 기대합니다.

“랜스데일 서재필의료원에서 한인동포를 위한 건강포럼 성황리에 마쳐 ”

서재필재단과 아인슈타인 몽고메리병원이 공동 주최한 한인동포를 위한 건강포럼이 약 300명의 한인 등이 참가한 가운데 성황리에 열렸다.

지난 토요일 오전10시부터 오후 1시까지  랜스데일 서재필의료원에서 열린 이번 행사에는 김인교 의학박사를 비롯하여 총  50여명의 의사 및 의료인들이 나와 참가자들을 대상으로 무료 건강검진과 건강 세미나를 실시하는 등 봉사활동을 벌여 큰 호응을 얻었다.

또한 이번 행사에는 공동 주관한 아인슈타인 몽고메리병원을 포함하여 B형 간염재단, 요크 요양원 등 총 7개 건강관련 단체가 참가하여 한인 동포들에게 도움을 제공했다.

유명 전문의 등에 의해 진행된 무료 건강상담과 검진에서는 ▲일반내과 ▲산부인과 ▲통증전문의 ▲암전문의 ▲정형외과 ▲간염전문의 ▲중풍 전조증 검사 ▲B형간염검사▲재활치료 등이 단계별로 진행되었다.

특히  바쁜 생활에 쫓겨 독감예방접종 기회를 놓친 50여명의 동포들을 대상으로 무료백신을 제공했고, 21명을 대상으로 B형간염검사, 그리고 130여명에 대하여 혈압측정 등 무료 건강검진을 실시했다.

한편, 만성통증 등으로 건강상담을 받은 한인 P.S. 김(72)씨는 전문의가 “건강을  위해 물을 마시는 것도 적절한 시간에 효과적으로 해야한다“고 했다며, “전문의를 통해 구체적인 정보를 얻게 되어 많은 도움이 될 것 같다”고 덧붙혔다.

서재필재단 최현태 회장은 행사를 마치면서 “한인동포들의 건강과 복지를 지켜나가기 위해  서재필재단은 앞으로도 미국사회의 다양한 단체들과 협력의 장을 만들어 나가겠다”고 말했다.
